A real God wouldn't need it, but an imaginary one would, only those religions invented by men to control the masses would need such a fairy tail.

According to catholic beliefs and traditions, the devil is not an instrument of God, it's an enemy of God. This means that God doesn't use the devil to test people. Actually, it is a sort of "battle" for who of those gets more souls in the end.
According to catholic beliefs and traditions —again—, the consequences are clear. If you obey God's rules (which are merely 10) and care for turning the world into a better place (in one word, love), you will be with Him for all eternity. If you choose not to do it, you will be thrown to hell with the devil for all eternity.
But the interesting thing is that you do not need to do much for yourself. Actually —and according to Catholic beliefs and traditions, once more—, God has already solved the equation with Jesus Christ: He has defeated the domination of evil in the world and he has given man the knowledge and weapons (the Holy Ghost/Spirit) to defend himself from the devil. The new question God asks to man is whether they want to accept His Saviour or not. If you accept, you must ask accordingly. Else, well, you can make up you mind later... but He still loves you and still waits for you.
It's something more complicated as a matter of fact, but there you have a general idea.
Good luck.

God doesn't use the devil to test us and He doesn't try to break our will to get us to sin. The devil does that all by his little lonesome. The devil is trying to destroy you but God is providing the way out. It's just the same as when Jesus was tested by the devil. Jesus leaned on God and prevailed but it was a battle.
It's also important to know that God will not step in unless asked and His answers are not always magic to produce what we desire immediately. Like Job, we sometimes need to be patient and stand firm in our beliefs. It's not a matter of God not caring as much as it is a matter of His desire for us to grow and learn how to stay close to Him. Whenever we get to the other side of our trials we can look back and see how God protected and supported us. In the middle it's not always easy to see. Learning not to look at the immediate and look forward to the end helps us stay focused and keeps our minds out of the "devils playground".

I think so we can see what kind of people we are. (God does not try to get us to sin) He sent his only begotten son to atone for our sins.. so why would he want us to sin when his son would have to pay the price for every persons sin that has ever been born? That just doesn't make ant sense! It is the Devil also known as Satan or Lucifer that tries to tempt and break us... That is why you are here to decide you you will serve.
As for me in my house we will serve the Lord.

God doesn't use the devil to test us. He allows the devil to do so. He does so because He wants us to come back to Him and find our strength in Him. He is the only way we can get through such trials, and He wants us to realize that.

God doesn't use the devil to test us. . .the devil does that on his own. God knows you will sin, although I'm sure he wishes you wouldn't. . He loves you anyway!

Personally this is coming from years of asking myself that same question.Christianity's god is no different than Zeus or Allah. They are sadists. They get a kick out of playing with your emotions, toying with your well-being until you end up like John (insane enough to write some mumbo-jumbo book a.k.a. Revelations) if he exists.

That's only the Christian and Muslim god. If there is a God, I doubt it cares. And there is no devil, that's a bunch of story telling to scare people into religion.

We are not here to be tested by Him. We are here as an object of His love.. Why do people have children? Trust me there isn't any tangible benefit in it. We do it out of love.. Glad you asked.. Jim

Either God wants to abolish evil and cannot,
or he can but does not want to,
or he cannot and does not want to,
or lastly he can and wants to.
If he wants to remove evil, and cannot,
he is not omnipotent;
If he can, but does not want to,
he is not benevolent;
If he neither can nor wants to,
he is neither omnipotent nor benevolent;
But if God can abolish evil and wants to,
how does evil exist?
