I've talked to them before, but it's been a long time. Either way, I know it's going to be awkward, so I'm looking for something to say that will spark conversation, but not make me seem weird.

Ask the other person about something they are interested in... movies, sports, cars, hobbies, family, travel.

I would just walk up to him and say "Hey, see that girl over there (point to anybody!), she wants to know if you think I'M cute" that should get a smile started!

"hey, what's up?" always works.
Or you could talk about a test or social activity. Like this
"Hey, are you going to [name here]'s party? I heard it'll be great." or "What did you think about the test? I thought it was easy/moderate/hard."

if he's in one of your classes, ask about the homework. then go on to talk about the class and then hopefully more topics.
