I expect higher rates when its time to renew our policy. However, since my brother in law is not on our policy, does not reside in our house and the policyholders (my wife and I) didn't have the accident, I am wondering if it would make sense to go to another insurance company.

I realize that other insurance companies ask for your former/current insurance company and sometimes the policy number but do you by law have to give it to them?

In other words, will I be able to get insurance rates that do not reflect this accident?

Generally speaking a non-listed driver, non-resident doesn't affect your rates. For the correct answer to your question, which is, are my rates gonna rise b/c of my brother-in-law's accident, call your agent. That's their job to know.

If im not mistaken most insurance companys will run a accident report on each potential person they insure. So most likely it will show up.. Especially if they run the vin# on the veh, it may show up. Your rates will most likely go up if the accident was your brother in laws fault because it was your veh, but if it wasn't his fault then you may be alright..

the first thing to do is call some other companies and ask them. If they say they can, tell them you want their word that there is no problem.. Y ou wouldnt want to change and then get cancelled and couldnt get the present company back.
