how many lbs of water retention are possible from high sodium?

The answer depends on a few factors.

Do you have normally functioning kidneys?? If you do, then water retention can be responsible for only a pound or two, perhaps a little more..

But if you DON'T have normally functioning kidneys, you can have liters of fluid trapped that you can't get rid of.
