Rub a little pomade between your hands to distribute it evenly. Then depending on the look you want, you can either twirl sections of hair around your finger, or just kind of fluff your hair with your hands, or work your hands into your hair from the inside-out. When you like what you see, you can finish it up with a little hair spray to hold it. I like the Fructis Pure Fix strong hold hairspray because it smells good, gives good hold, and yet is touchable.
If you want a tousled ponytail or updo, brush your hair forward (towards your face) with your fingers. Then loosely pull it back in a high or low ponytail, or loosely twist it and secure for an updo.

I saw this tip in Seventeen magazine, and although I've never tried it, I'm sure it works beautifully. Do your hair at night (ex. curl it, style it) and then sleep on it, and only do light touch-ups in the morning. This gives you a tousled look, and also allows you to sleep in an extra 15-30 minutes!

Maybe you should take a bit of gel, rub it in your hands, and then pull at the ends of your hair in the direction, or style that want it to go in. You can also try to ruffle it up for a more messy-type look.
You should try using pomades, and styling creams. You can also apply a little wax if you want better definition.
Good luck with this style.

do u have long hair or short hair? i have long hair with lots of layers and the way i do it is i buy this hair surum by sammy and i just put a tiny bit in the palm of my hair and basically shake it through my hair and get alittle bit all over but just a tiny bit then i blow dry my hair and then all my layers stand out so it looks like messy cute. cause i have really straight straight hair so you cant even tell i have layers unless i use the stuff. and my friend has real short hair and she says she just puts alittle gel in her hair and shakes it around

Try some of Nick Chavez's products, especially the flocker..... I believe he's got his own website but he's also got a salon in Hollywood and appears on the Home Shopping Channel every so often.... try ebay as well for his products.

When it's damp, work in some mouse or scrunch spray and let it air dry or mildly blowdry it.

My guess would be to spritz with hairspray, then ruffle with hands
