Cause the guy or gal that named them dough-nuts patented the name first...silly...it's an obvious answer...logical, too. But I do like the name "sugar wheels" cause it makes one stop and think they are putting mostly sugar in their body. But they probably stop and think and then do it anyway. Personally, I don't like dough-nuts. I have other temptations....

In the olden days, "doughnuts" were chunks of bread dough that were dropped into hot oil. They were retrieved and rolled in sugar and cinnamon. The "wheel" look didnt' come until later. And, "sugar wheels" could also imply a type of candy or cookie! :)
