Read the section where you sign your return. It says "under penalty of perjury, I declare that I have examined this return and accompanying schedules...they are true, correct and complete." People do lie on their tax returns. It's a crime, but that doesn't bother everyone. Some of them get away with it, some don't. Your call.......

The year I deducted moving expenses, I was audited because of the moving expenses. I ended up not owing anything, even got a small (around $50) additional refund - but my move was a legal deduction under the law.

The IRS will compare the zip code for your previous address with the zip code for your new address and calculate the likely distance involved. This is pretty much automatic. If it's more than 50 miles you MIGHT get checked. If it's less than 50 miles you WILL get checked.

Is you question is: can I cheat?

Sure, you can try. But you might get audited. And then, you risk being brought up on fraud charges.

For moving expenses... it's sooo not worth it. If you want to break the law, there are more lucrative ways.

My CPA told me that the main thing that triggers an audit is a sudden change in income, either up or down.
