It's my understanding that they are kept for a certain amount of time, especially if they are considered evidence in an ongoing case or investigation. After that, they are destroyed. I also worked at a police academy once, and they had a small amount of drugs on hand to assist in training K-9 units. The drugs were some that were confiscated, but there were very strict regulations for how they had to be stored and secured.

They re-sell a lot of it, they just keep enough to convict the dealer, then put the rest back on the streets. They did a drug raid in my town and got 5 kilos of Cocaine, but a week later it came up missing from the Police property room, clear cut evidence that the Police are a main contributor to the drug abuse in this country, it's about the almighty dollar.

It gets locked in a secure evidence storage room in the event it is needed for future legal actions. Sometimes it takes years to clear cases and the police have an elaborate record keeping system for evidence. After that it is securely destroyed.

After all of the trials and after all appeals are over with, they are destroyed normally. Some may be used for undercover work

They are sent to a lab for verification purposes. When they are returned they are locked up as evidence until all court proceedings are complete, at which time they are incinerated. Illegal drugs are never used in undercover stings. If police conducts a reverse sting operation (where drugs are sold as opposed to bought), we use placebos. It would be just as illegal for us to sell illegal narcotics in a sting operation as it would be for anyone else to sell illegal narcotics.

Stupid people....
They save all of the drugs as evidence in whatever trial they are for. After the trial they are destroyed. Except for a small percentage that is used narcotics agents for sting operations.

Most cops will turn the drugs into the evidence dept. and a few will keep them to either sell on the streets or party.
