No, but I believe that George Lucas said based his story one an mixture of religions, hence the virgin birth. I found this out when watching the George Lucas interview that is a part of the DVD extras in the Star Wars DVD sets.

At the risk of being controversial... Yeah, why not. He IS just a character in a story but I don't believe in religion and so to me all books (including holy ones) are just stories with characters and I don't see why worshipping a character in a 2000 year old book is any better than worshipping one from a 30 year old film.

Not really.

Star Wars does lend itself very well to a Freudian interpretation though. 'Vader' does of course mean 'father'.

Luke attacks his father with a glowing, extendable 'sabre'. The Oedipal resonances are rife...
