We talk frequently with family abroad. We tried video chat with Yahoo and MSN, but were not thrilled with the quality. We are currently using Skype (voice only). It is free between PCs and just a couple of cents a minute to a regular phone.

it really might be cheaper to just get some kind of phone card to call your son. There are several long distance phone plans that you can get, but Germany tends to not be one of the countries included. You also most likely would have to switch your internet provider. I would definitely look into phone cards (can buy one for 20 dollars and it costs a penny a minute) or a pay as you go cell phone. Good luck and best wishes to your family.

Well are family is in the Army also and while we are not overseas we do live 1000 miles from are parents. Personally we use the internet to our advantage. WE use Yahoo messenger or Skype (www.skype.com) and you can make free pc to pc calls any where in the world. Plus you can set up web cams and see each other in live time! My husband is curently serving overseas also and it is such peace of mind to actually get to see him on the computer and know he is o.k. rather than just hear him on the phone.
Also I know that some phone companies do offer international plans for oversea families but really not sure who might in your area.

Here's a link to an explanation of Skype that is mentioned above:
http://about.skype.com/product.html
It's a great, free service, but both parties need to be on their computer to talk. For about $29.95 per year, you can actually call phone lines using Skype, but I'm not sure of the details of that service.
The quality of this is pretty good, depending on how quick your Internet connection is on both ends. It does get a little choppy sometimes, but.... IT'S FREE!
Good luck!

Just dial 10-10-297 before all the rest of the numbers you have to dial. It makes it so it is 5 or 8 cents a minute.

Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Both ends need the YM with voice software (assuming that both ends has Internet access) a headset with a mic. You're all set!
