Southern Baptists are "Southern Baptists" because they broke from the Northern Baptists over the issue of slavery. Southern Baptists preached from their pulpits that Slavery was ordained by God. Southern Baptists said that God was on the side of the South during the Civil War. Southern Baptists just apologized for their role in slavery in the past 10 years. They have been out of touch forever and long to admit their mistakes. However, they remain the largest protestant denomination in the country. When will they admit their wrongdoing with other hot button issues of our times...homosexuality, etc...

This isn't a question of southern vs. north. Nor, does it have anything to do with the traditions of the south. I just wonder why someone would align with a religion with such a history of hate...a religion that did not admit to it until the past 10 years.

Southern Baptists are generally much more conservative on many 'hot button' issues. However, it does not mean they are wrong. It's their oppinion and their belief, just like you have yours. Neither is wrong, it's up to the believer.

As a Baptist Theologian, I believe that I am the most qualified person to answer this excellent question:
A: One becomes a Southern Baptist so that they may conform closely to their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We southern Baptists understand that God doesn't like Black people, women and homosexuals.
WE, therefore, try to stick together so that the Southern Baptist's can be "purified" from the stain of liberal religion that accepts these "impure" people.
The Southern Baptists, are, in effect, a club and YOU are not invited.
We like guns, NASCAR, southern gospel music, golf, grilling out and church. Just leave us alone so we can get to Heaven peacefully!

I was born into the Southern Baptist denomination - but I've since realized that it, along with all other religious groups, are fantasies that people use because they have an overwhelming need to feel important, and religion's the only way they know how to do it. I myself am perfectly happy to be just another tiny bit of the universe.

Because one agrees with the teachings of the Southern Baptists. There is religious freedom in this country and people are free to choose to join whatever church they wish to, or not to join, or believe at all.

Y'all know it's hard to let go of the old traditions in the face of hard evidence on all sides. The old ways are a comfort and it's much easier not to have to think seriously about political and cultural issues and to make one's own decisions about them.
I've come to understand quite a bit about the South since transplanting to NC from PA and points north. I no longer have the arrogance to make blanket statements about anything.
