I don't believe that by just improving the safety features of the American vehicle will increase the sales .... There are a lot more important factors that consumers would want over and above just the safety features, like for example: better fuel consumption that equates to better efficiency, good quality and reliability that equates to less number of time you need to visit the workshop, blah blah blah ... However, I think we cannot totally discard SAFETY as well. There must still have a minimum safety standard for example: Airbags, ABS, etc. Reason is because you may be the safest driver in the world, but you never know who is out there maybe drunk and come driving straight into you where you can do nothing about it! So my opinion is that unless efficiency and quality is significantly improved to be better than the Asian or European, by just improving the Safety portion is definitely not enough!

Quality yes. Safety no. People typically don't buy on safety, they rely on the government to make sure ALL cars are safe regardless of whether that system is actually working. How many times does someone say "I love my car...it's so safe."
Yeah, never.
To be competitive, american cars will need to be priced less than the more desirable brands such as Honda and Toyota, offer better warranties, better performance, and be at least as reliable. They need to be downright rabid about customer service in their service depts as this is where many new car owners begin hating their new cars.
They will need to go out of their way to find GOOD financing for people with bad credit. Face it...people with great credit and plenty of money typically don't buy American. But there is still a large customer base that's easily swayed by cheap financing.

What friggin planet do YOU live on?? How much more damn safety equipment can we possibly hang on our vehicles? It's not enough we are forced to endure a shotgun/airbag inches from out faces but now we are plauged by anti-roll, anti-slip, collision avoidence, side airbags, seat airbags, curtain airbags, traction control, On-Star, seatbelt tensioners, anti-lock brakes, low tire pressure indicators, blah, blah, blah ---
I am SICK of safety equipment being shoved down our throats. The more safety garbage that is packed into todays cars the less people feel the need to actually DRIVE. A good driver is safer than ANY amount of electronic gadgets possible. After all, avoiding collisions is far, far safer than surrounding ourselves in airbags and tons of metal.
P.S - to Lewis Bells: go to hell.

I have NEVER purchased ANY vehicle in my life based on anything remotely connected to safety in that vehicle. Safety isn't even on my list of things to look for. I have a 1963 Chevy ll Nova that I drive around with nothing more than working lights and brakes. Driven it for 6 years now...no accidents. Guess if the car is driven properly and safely then all that safety crap isn't needed I be thinking.

Nope.
Why treat the symptoms instead of the problem?
The problem is that people need to learn to follow the rules of the road. Then, all will be good.
I can take ANY accident and place fault on a single incident that could have been avoided.
Mind you...My favorite reason is: Driving outside the abilities of the driver and/or vehicle. Think about it.

Here is some interesting basic input from a guy who hates anything with rubber or steel wheels. Cars particularly in this case. If you knew how many tons daily per vehicles alone spewed into the air, you'd probably be like everyone else and not give too much of a sh*t, maybe not, but this is why I don't drive and this is why I donate and contribute this input regardless of it being the answer you are looking for because I tell it like it is, and I tell it like it ought to be told for the sake of somehow taking a chance at saving what is left and remaining of our once pure oxygen.
