my mum in law says to defrost it under the cold tap, and then when it feels like chicken does, put it in the microwave for four minutes on defrost.

Your mum-in-law is almost right.
If you defrost it from frozen in a microwave you'll cook bits, burn bits and leave frozen bits. Guaranteed salmonella.

The defrost setting on most microwaves doesn't do much in 4 minutes. You're better off putting it in warm water for a while. If you can, leave it on the worktop all day (covered of course).

Don't dick about with chicken. It needs to be defrosted slowly and cook properly.
It's not like steak and anyone who eats it 'rare', or even 'medium' will become very ill indeed.

You can defrost anything under the microwave BUT it is better to defrost slowly in the kitchen and then cook. If you cook too soon, which microwaving suggests you might, then the centre of the carcass will not be properly defrosted and it will not cook so well either. It is the danger of cold spots in the cooked bird that leads to infection.

I always defrost chicken in the microwave on defrost, not a whole one of course, just portions like 6 thighs or legs etc.. I am still here and so are the rest of my family, depends on how much as to how long. I can honestly say i have never had salmonella!

Defrosting

It's important never to thaw poultry on the counter, where bacteria can grow. Follow these tips on defrosting chicken and turkey safely.

Thaw poultry in the refrigerator.A safe guideline to thaw allows 5 hours per pound.

Or, immerse packaged poultry in cold water. Be sure to change the water every half hour.

Thawing Times
Refrigerator
For every 5 pounds, allow 24 hours in the refrigerator. Cold Water Immersion
For every pound, allow a half-hour in cold water.
5 lbs 1 day 8 lbs 4 hrs
10 lbs 2 days 10 lbs 5 hrs
15 lbs 3 days 12 lbs 6 hrs

Protect raw poultry from other foods. We don't recommend unwrapping a poultry package before you're ready to cook, however, we do suggest overwrapping the package in plastic wrap, or placing it on a plate as it thaws.

Take note of appearance, touch and smell. The product should not be eaten if it appears gray, feels slimy or smells sour. When in doubt, throw it out.

It's OK to go from freezer to oven. You don't need to defrost poultry before cooking. All you have to do is increase the cooking to 1 ½ times the recommended cooking time.

Cook poultry the day it completely thaws

Possibly, but I wouldn't risk it. You can speed up the defrosting process by running it under the cold tap, but it should be done naturally at room temp. Any heat in the middle can cause germs to multiply.
This is if you are talking a whole chiken or chicken on the bone. Chicken fillets should be cooked through from frozen.
Say bye bye to mr E. Coli!

I would never defrost any meat in the microwave,do be careful. Chicken breasts take only a few hrs to defrost and once they start you can begin to cut them up which will then result in a shorter defrosting time.

The best is defrost it in the refridge on the lower shelf or put it under a pot of running cold water

4 min in microwave is not long enough to cook chicken ....is the internal temperature of the chicken 165 degree farenhiet after 4 min? microwaving is the worst way to cook .....unless reheating....

we always defrost chicken then cook it, we have defrost function on our microwave though. The time you leave it in depends on how much chicken you have to defrost, with chicken breasts you have to make sure there defrosted the whole way through

A good micro will defrost safely, but one would need to get it into the cooker quickly to prevent nasties. I usually use cold water If nothing else, I will know it won't have cooked at all by some freak accident.
