Spondylolisthesis? That's slippage of one vertebral body on another. Normally, these are all held one on top of another by the facet joints (a.k.a. zygapophyseal joints, or Z joints), and by a cluster of ligaments around the spine. The ability to exercise depends on two things: first, what are your symptoms? Sciatica and/or weakness in the legs is an indication that there may be nerve root compression, which needs attention before you think about exercise. Secondly, how good is your core strength? Having a floppy core will create problems during exercise. Conversely, having a stable and strong core allows you to exercise with this condition. I had a patient who was 73 yrs old at the time, with about a 25% slippage of one lumbar vertebra on another, and after a good core program, she went back to downhill skiing. It all starts with a good core. See a sports medicine doctor for more guidance. To find a sports medicine doctor, go to www.amssm.org and use Find a Doc.
