My 2 dogs (a pug and a pug/french bulldog mix) currently eat Canidae for all life stages. I'm considering switching them to Innova EVO. All of a sudden I am hearing negative effects of high protein diets (more than 20 - 25%.. innova EVO is 42%). Such as increased aggression, kidney problems, etc. Have any of you heard this? Or have any experience with it?

My dogs are exercised to an average extent, but are not extremely active (not working dogs, etc. obviously). We have walks/playtimes during the week, and visits to the dog park for 2 - 3 hours every weekend. They keep each other very occupied and play for about 3 hours per day. but nothing extreme in the way of activity/exercise

The only thing I watch for in higher protien foods is not to feed anything with over 28% protien to dogs younger than 18 monthsas there may be a negative effect during developement.
I have heard of the theory of high protien diets causing more aggression but have never had anyone present research to support the theory.

Yes, high levels of protein are not normal. Dogs are carnivores but the truth is, raw meat is not that high in protein. If you do a check on meats of various types you'll find protein ranging from 7-25% for most meats the rest is water, fat, etc. You should be looking for a food that most closely matches this type of diet with high quality protein but not too much of it. Ideally, a raw whole prey diet is what everyone would feed but if you cannot, choose foods that use whole identified types of proteins (ideally more than one) as the first ingredient with any byproducts, meals, grains or vegetables lower on the list.
To check protein levels for raw foods, try the USDA's site here: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/
you can type in the word raw chicken and then choose a portion and look up the information for 100 grams. You can do this for most meats and compare protein levels.

High protein diets are detrimental only to developing puppies, especially those of large breeds.

I've never seen any information to support the harmful effects of protein in a dog's diet -- the dog's digestive tract is specifically designed to utilize a meat-based diet.

An analysis of Innova EVO RM:

It received a very good rating, as did Canidae.

Dogs are natural carnivores. They must have a high protein diet- they have difficulty processing carbohydrates. This can lead to diabetes and kidney infections. Dogs' health improves drammatically when put on a high-quality high protein and water content commercial food or a raw meat and bone diet.

Humans, on the other hand, can suffer serious health risks from a high protein diet. Humans get most of their nutrition from carbohydrates and have difficulty processing a high protein diet.
