i find it hard to flirt if they dont start it, what are some tips or ideas that you have

if they are shy dont make it worse by flirting,treat them as a person be nice to them talk to them see how it goes and take it from there.

just be yoursellf and do what comes naturally. there are all sorts of flirting tecniques, some blatant and some more subtle, a smile and the twwinkle of an eye will be recognised just as much if the feeling is mutual so be yourself and reap the benefits

Get to know him better so he feels comfortable around you then you can make him laugh and things will start getting beter from there. Just make sure you don't come off as desperate

try to make them feel relaxed by talking about general stuff, but done try to sound like a geek, be casual.
sometimes eyes speak more so see what their reaction is & then respond accordingly, believe me you'll know when the time is right.
