i dont know of anywhere that will let 6 people in one room. if he cant afford to go, he shouldnt go. if you want to be tight about it then book for 2 rooms, put 2 adults and 1 child in each room (the child usually being free). hotel porta maggiore is €80 a night for a double room with one free child place. theres lots of cheap hotels if comfort is not an issue, which clearly it isnt, all around the termini area but i dont know any names, try venere.com

To put 5 persons in a room will be a challenge in Rome as most hotels accommodate a maximum of 4 [ 2 adults and 2 extra beds ].

I suggest that you go to this directory, select your location, star rating and price [ use the sort facility ] then dig into the room configurations, which are all on the one site.

Failing this, you may need to order two rooms adjoining. When you put your request through put this remarks in the "additional remarks" section.

"Cheap" may end out being expensive if you do not research properly. Make sure that you avoid high transport costs [ x 5 ] by being close to where you need to be and reduce the use of amenitie and meal costs by checking if there are any inclusions. Last minute offers usually have some "extras" included", but doing this in peak season when rooms are pricy and scarce is risky - so booking ahead might be more sensible.

I was in rome a couple weeks ago. The best way to get a cheap room is at the airport. They have hotel reservation counters who show you online a list of hotels that suit your needs and finances. They offer good clean rooms within easy access of all the sights in the city. We got a double room 5 mins away from the spanish steps for 70 euros a night. There were cheaper if your not to fussed.

I stayed in this one:

http://www.hotelcerviaroma.com/index-english.htm.

It's near the Termini Station which is handy for travelling around, but, as mentioned above, not the most charming area. However, I felt safe enough and if you're on a budget it's easy enough to walk into the more beautiful parts from here.

This particular hotel was clean, adequate if otherwise unexciting, but good value by Rome standards.

This site from through which I got this hotel gives an extensive list of 1-star hotels in Rome and you could do worse than go through it and check their websites.

Rome isn't cheap!! I agree with some of the answers here: get yourself an apartment but book fast!! I booked mine for March 07 in January 07 and there were only a few options left...so 2 months booking in advance is the minimum! I booked through http://www.holiday-velvet.com / ask for a guy called James, he gave me and my family (we are 4) great service! I booked the apartment called Cedro with terrace!! what more do you want? I would never use hotels again after the experience we just had!

Rooms are quite small in Rome you might want to try and rent an apartment

You can try to Hotel Mariano. It is by the termini. I had a room that had one double bed and two singles. I would suggest renting a flat. It probably would be your best bet.
