- Chow down on a hard-boiled egg. Eating protein can often stop a pounding headache before it ruins your day – or at least lessen its severity. According to the Diamond Headache Clinic, carbs send your blood sugar soaring then crashing, which can bring on a headache. Protein takes longer to digest so it raises your blood sugar more slowly. Not an egg fan? No problem – munch nuts, string cheese, or a protein bar. Just avoid strong cheeses like Camembert, which have been shown to cause headaches.

- Deep breathing soothes headaches. A study at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center found that 5 minutes of daily breathing exercises helped reduce chronic tension and migraines by 80%! For maximum benefit, pretend you’re blowing out candles or trying to keep a pinwheel spinning as you exhale. Doing this helps slow your rate of breathing and triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which prompts relaxation.

- Try a cup of coffee or cola. Caffeine constricts the blood vessels that make your head throb-- and it happens to be one of the main ingredients in over-the-counter headache medications.

- An acupressure foot rub. The doctor says you’ll get just as much relief from someone rubbing your feet as an aspirin. He finds the best results come from rubbing the foot from just where the toes begin and over the ball of the foot. If you don’t have a foot rub partner on hand, soak your feet in hot water. That causes your body to redistribute blood from one concentrated area – your throbbing head – and get it flowing all over.

- For a throbbing headache:

* First: Identify the pain. Sheftell says there are two basic types of headaches. The first is a tension headache – that’s the most common one. If you have one, you’ll feel a dull pain all over your head – like you’re wearing a skullcap or a tight headband. It lasts about 2 hours, and is usually brought on by fatigue, hunger, or stress. The other type of headache is a migraine. They can last for days, and you’ll usually feel a sharp, shooting pain in your head – along with nausea and sensitivity to light and noise.

* Then, once you’ve figured out what type of headache you have: Get a remedy. If you have a tension headache, your best bet is an over-the-counter medicine. Sheftell usually recommends acetaminophen – which is the active ingredient in brands like Tylenol - since it’s easier on the stomach than aspirin.

Over-the-counter headache medicines can also work for migraines, but if the pain doesn’t go away after a day or so, see your doctor.

* And the final way to get rid of a headache: Avoid relapses. Once you’ve got the pain under control, steer clear of situations that could trigger another headache. This includes chewing gum or staring at a fixed point – like a computer screen. Sheftell says activities like that cause your muscles to tighten, which could lead to a headache. So ditch the gum, and make the effort to look away from your computer screen at least every 15 minutes.

Sex. Seriously! Got that straight from an R.N. Sex is supposed to be the best thing for a headache (no more using THAT excuse anymore) and it's also supposed to be one of the best cures for the symptoms of PMS.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck.
Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at

you could be lacking something in your diet. I get really bad headaches when dehydrated and not drunk enough water but too much coffee. Also maybe wearing sunglasses when you drive if slightly sunny.
