He isn't about the bling. Nor does He show off. You need to remember that the people in the Old Testament wouldn't have known who God was if He hadn't shown them.
And the early Christians learned about Jesus through His preaching, teaching and persorming miracles.

People like to exaggerate and make up stories about God punishing people. Some of the stories in the Bible probably are products of human imagination and exaggeration.
