It is an extremely quick and easy procedure. It takes about the time to actually just trim the nails..if that gives you any idea. Yes, they could cut the bone to far but that is rare considering the cat will be knocked out cold so its not like the cat will be jerking its paw and will make the vet slip..
Also someone said the cat could have a rare allergic reaction to the stitches but these days alot of vets use this purplish colored surgery glue which I have never seen any animals have a reaction to (i worked at a vet clinic) which doesnt say that it hasn't happened before.
Not much can go wrong really....they barely bleed so it isnt likely that the cat will bleed to much...I wouldnt worry honestly.

I just recently had my kitten declawed. Nothing will go wrong during the surgery. You have to trust your vet to do everything he needs to do. As far as after the surgery they will put bandages on his paws for the first day, then take them off on the second day. Unfortunately they do need to stay 2 nights in the vet after the declawing. That is probably the worst that can happen, you won't have you cat for 2 nights.

They can mess up and cut the bone a little two far, that cat will have more spread out paws, almost like pancakes. The stitches could make the cat have an allergic reaction (RARE). They could miss a claw (happened to my cat). Most of the time not much can go wrong unless you have a less than good vet in which they could cut the bones on the toes so far that it can basically ruin your kitties paws. The Anesiasia can also go wrong... Thats very bad!

The same things that can go wrong during any surgery - all anaesthetics/sedations involve a level of risk. Depending on what anaesthetic agent is used, the cat can have a reaction to it, although this is becoming increasingly rare with modern drugs. If the cat has any illness (liver/kidney trouble, diabetes), this can also affect the safety of the procedure. Risk is also increased in very young, or old animals. Cats are (increasingly often) intubated for procedures, which can cause laryngeal irritation and coughing for a limited time, although this is considered an acceptable risk in order to maintain a patent airway during anaesthesia. It's very rare for a healthy animal to die under anaesthetic, especially these days, but I've seen it happen.
Given all of the above, why would you want to subject your cat to an unnecessary anaesthetic when it is of no benefit to the animal?

The worst thing to happen, as with all surgeries, would be threat of infection. I am sure the Vet will explain the to you to keep an eye on cleanliness. It's pretty safe throughout the "declaw" process. Relax, your cat will be fine.

I hope you are only getting the fronts declawed. They should keep their hind ones, just on the off chance they get outside for protection. It's a common procedure, don't worry, your kitty will be fine. It takes such a short amount of time, too. Your vet will call you (usually) after it's over with to say how things went. and just to let you know, my kitties were jumping around later the next day.

The risks of surgery for declawing is the same as any other surgery. These are extremely rare, but include- your cat not taking well to the anesthesia (death), hemmorhage, infection, nerve damage, and, muscle damage.
