Well, I think that everyone should have the right to come over to the good ole USA. We are a diverse country. However, I do feel that they should learn to speak english just as hard as everyone else that comes to this country. You don't see, United States in chinese, africian, or french at the bottom of the page.

How did we let our goverment get to the point that they are even considering making everybody learn spanish - just because they happen border our SW states ?
What's next ! Learning french because we have french speaking people on the border in Canada?
Ellis Island and the people who came to this country to have a better life through Ellis have been betrayed by a bunch of greedy polictions who only think of what is best for them and the H-ll which the American people. Stop and think people these Ellis Islanders are your forefathers and mothers do we turn our backs on them? IF you want to live in the US of A then learn to speak english

I agree with soooo many answers on here. I am all for people coming to this country and being a part of it. But at least here in my town, your job choices are cut in half if you don't speak Spanish, and I am all against that. I have customers that come in almost daily that start talking in Spanish...I don't speak Spanish. If they don't speak English fine, but when I get an attitude from them because I don't speak Spanish? That's BS. I would never go to another country and be mad that the people there don't speak MY language.
I am used to seeing signs in English and Spanish, but now I am finding signs in Spanish only! What the heck is that? I now refuse to shop at places that use Spanish signs. Sorry, but oh well. They get enough business as it is, they don't need me. But I guess if enough people refused to speak other peoples native language then they would have to learn our language.
I went to beauty school and you have to take a test from the state to get you license to prove that you know all the safety and chemical stuff, they could care less if you can actually cut hair or paint nails whatever, as long as you know how to protect the person from the chemicals and if you cut them, etc. Anyhow, point being, the test is offered in a bunch of different languages...why? Almost all the product safety information and MSDS is in English only! If they cannot read English how on earth are they going to know all the procautions and dangers of the products they are using??? I understand it is more comfortable to answer questions from a test in your native language, but they should have to prove they can read and understand English warnings and labels! That thing just kinda blows my mind.
Anyhow back to the main point... I know there is no official language in this country, but the majority of people speak English. Why should they have to learn another language for someone else? Any other language, it doesn't matter. (And why is it only Spanish, not any other language even though there are many different people in this country? It must be because everyone else is willing to learn English.)
I do think they should maintain their language in their household or among themselves, it is an important part of who they are and is important that they maintain that. But nobody else should have to do everything special for them. And I hate getting an attitude because I don't know their language! At least be understanding that not everyone is willing to learn how to communicate your way!
Hmmm and if I wanted to learn about other cultures I would go to their country! And I wouldn't expect them to speak my language either! It has nothing to do with being smug.

You are right and I had not noticed that before. Interesting. The US is the only country to not have a national language or identity.
But what can be done? You use your cell and it says press one for English. Most products in the grocery store have spanish on the front. The Yahoo thing is a further example regarding the fact that hispanics do not want to integrate and we have lost our country.

I surely did, and I don't think it should be there because we're just making illegal aliens more and more comfortable. I know that that sounds mean but it is the truth cause if they want to live they need to learn ENGLISH!!!!

Yes, I agree. We have been considered the "great melting pot" for some time now, but people are no longer "melting" into the pot. I say assimilate or get out! When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

And it will go on for as long as people offer to provide spanish language choices in the U.S. If we all simply refused to communicate with our fellow Americans in any language other than english, they'd be forced to assimilate to the country in which they live.
