But nice black pants, nice shirt, nice shoes..NO RUNNING SHOES!!! Tell the women to wear nice heels, these things happen once in a lifetime, Dress up for the ocassion..THen go out to a nice restaurant for dinner

Dress nice. If you're younger, other performance-goers are not expecting you to wear a suit or anything too fancy. Collared shirt or something with nice lines. No jeans, no sneakers (as someone else mentioned), no T-Shirts.
I had good luck with a nice sweater over a short-sleeve button-up shirt, the contrast with color of the sweater and the color of the shirt's collar helped a lot. Also seen lots of people with a standard dress shirt + tie, even without the jacket. If you don't have a suit-jacket you could even get away with just a vest, as 90% of the time when you wear a jacket, you're taking it off and carrying it over your arm anyway. :^)

If you dress up, you can enjoy the theatre experience a bit more. Any reasonable dress is fine for LA theatre. In other words, where what you really want to.
