My child dropped my Canon PowerShot S500, so I'm shopping for a new one. I care more for the quality of the picture than for the aesthetics of the camera itself. I also found that Canon seems to have 2 lines: PowerShot SD-xxx, and PowerShot A-xxx. I can't for the life of me figure out which one is more value-oriented, and which one is more quality-oriented, because they appear to be in a similar price category. What are the major differences between these 2 lines?

Thanks.

I'll fall in line with Koko. The SD are stylish with not as much user control. The A are more "photographer" oriented.

I have an SD900 and it is a wonderful camera, but it is my "pocket" camera for use when I don't want to carry an SLR.

My son has an A620 and my brother has an A630 and they aer both very well satisfied with their cameras.

The thing about all three of these cameras (and the A640) that makes them excel is the fact that they have a larger sensor than most other compact digital cameras. If you buy any SD cameras other than the SD900 or any A-series other than the A600-series (now limited to the A630 and A640), you will be getting a sensor that is half the size of these cameras and it really shows in the quality.

Having said that, far and away the best value for picture quality measured vs. price is the A630. It's just $215 now and the other two I mentioned are $300 and $350.

The SD series are more oridented towards size convience. I totally love my SD700IS but it is totally over priced for the size (or it was when I got it). The A series are oridented for bugget and more bang for your buck since it has a larger sensor than all the SD cameras. The larger sensor makes the pictures better. If you want a camera that gives you the best imagine quality for the buck, the A series are the ones you will get. If you want a convient camera that can fit in your pocket, the SD series are great. SD series are not most bang for your buck imagine quality wise, its more fitting the A series camera into a smaller body is what your paying for and you lose imagine quality with the smaller sensor (but still the pictures are still great but not for the price you normally will pay for it)

I sell cameras for a living and the difference between the 2 lines is the A line is not made as well and is more affordable, although they are both GREAT camera lines. If buying your camera at Best Buy, ask about the service plan, it covers accidental handling so if your kid drops the new one it will be covered and save you money. Good Luck in your search

The SDs are basically smaller, metal based cameras.

The As are plastic mid sized cameras.

The A710 is an excellent all around camera for about $250 Big zoom, lots of features, good price.

If you want SMALL dinky there is the SD600 or SD650

via default, Canons placed out the excellent photographs for the funds. Panasonic Lumix does come to a particularly close 2nd, IMO. yet with Canon, you get the further fringe of hacked firmwares commencing off up all varieties of recent opportunities.
