Does he have his mouth open? Any time a cat has open-mouth breathing it can be a very serious issue. This type of heavy breathing could be an indicator of respiratory disease or feline asthma. Is your cat lethargic(laying around)? If the heavy breathing continues for more than 12 hours then you need to see a vet asap. You should google your cats symptoms or the above diseases...

Sudden, heavy breathing could be a sign of a heart murmur. With a heart murmur, the blood doesn't flow through the heart properly, it sort of swishes back and forth through the chambers of the heart. Eventually, fluid can collect around the lungs, putting pressure on them, making it hard for your cat to breathe.

Is your cat old? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my 14 year old cat did that for a few days before she died. Could also be allergies, hairballs, or just a respiratory infection. Take her to the vet.

This happened to my cat and it ended up being an infection from a cat scratch that was building up fluid and pressing on his lungs. It would have been fatal if I had not taken him to the vets, they had to do a small surgery but then he was fine.

Is your cat over weight if he is you should take him to a doctor. if you can not afford one only feed him 2 times a day once in the morning and at dinner. take him outside and get him active. even his food could be causing it. It also depends on how old your cat is, or what breed.

He could have fluid on his lungs, caused by a number of things - cat flu, pneumonia, chest infection, allergy, feline leukaemia.
He could be in pain.
Whatever, he really needs to see a vet as soon as possible.
