My Mom and Dad had two of them (still have one). They have a tendency to be very possessive and territorial. They had to put one to sleep after he became very aggressive and started what the vet called "sport killing" He was killing small animals (birds and then advanced to rabbits) and the habit got worse. They next thing he tried to kill was me. 57 stitches and 6 months recovering. And then he tried to turn on my Mom. And that was the end of him .And this is a dog that we raised and trained. The other one is a little better tempered, but we still do not allow him around the grand kids, for fear of what may happen. My parents say they will never have another one. As far as a big strong dog that is good tempered and will intimidate just about anyone, I would go with a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They are really awesome and protective and still have nice tempers. Mine thinks he is a poodle. And he loves to swim with the family in the summer. Good Luck with what ever dog you decide on.

Since you are not married and fresh out of college, keep in mind your life will change a lot in the next 10-15 years - the average lifespan of a dog. If you get married and have kids in that time frame, this may not be the best breed for you. They do tend to be dominant high-prey drive dogs and tend to be one-person dogs. While any dog can be socialized to people, akitas, do tend to be stubborn and would not be my first pick in this category. Doberman or German Shepherd dog might be better choices given your criteria.

I never had one but there was a couple in my training class that had an akita. I couldn't believe how strong the dog was. It was a beautiful dog but I could definitely see how they could cause problems at home. Very fiesty and I agree with some people who said they can be hard to trust. The dog seemed very nippy. However, it all depends on how well you train and socialize it. I just got out of college and got a jack russell....and there are a lot of negative stereotypes associated with them...but mine is great.....so you never know.

Akitas ARE NOT people dogs. They were not bred to be companion animals like Labs or Retrievers. They were bred to be outside guard dogs. They will bond well with their owners, but will be very aloof or aggressive with strangers depending on how well they were socialized. I would never recommend they be anywhere around children! They also tend to not be good around other animals because of the guard dog and prey drive instincts.
Good guard dog and good with people, just don't go together. But I believe, any breed dog, if they feel threatened enough will be a great guard dog. My dog is part rottie, nicest dog in the world, but because of the way she looks, no one messes with me when I am with her!

Generally, yes. However, it is ENTIRELY your responsibility to train the dog properly. Any dog can be trained if you start correctly as a puppy.
You might consider a German Shepherd. They are very good with people, and come in different sizes up to like "Grizzly Bear Size"... some of them are really surprisingly big, but they are friendly if trained right.

My brother has had a few akitas and I did not care for them. You couldnt trust them. One bit my nephew on the back of the head one day when the little boy wasnt even playing witht he dog. They seem gentle one minute but can turn any second.

Loyal to the owner, though very unpredictable around strangers; and unsuspecting children who may walk up to pet them. They are strong dogs and a bit feisty- i would do some thinking on this one before picking one up.

It all depends how you train them. Some are better then another. If. you start straining while its still young your in pretty good shape. But if you have young children I don't recomend it. To keep it all simple, it all depends on you :D
