He doesn't have the "gay talk", you know, tone of voice, hand gestures, etc. He doesn't have it.
Also, he is not a neat freak or really thin (remember that episode of Seinfeld?)

Does he check out men or women? All men will check out someone if they find them attractive. This is the only way. I know a man who is so "manly" you would never guess he has been in a committed relationship with another man for 10 years. He is a big burly teddy bear grandpa kind of guy. He chops wood. Wears flannel. Has no fashion sense what so ever. There home is what you would typically think a single straight mans home would look like. He loves sports. He eats a ton of meat and potatoes. He fixes cars. He fits no stereotypes at all. You will never really truly know unless you ask, but for fear of insulting him I would watch who he checks out when you are in public.

Because now there is a new attitude called living on the DL. And before that came out I'm just a woman that could spot certain behaviors of a man without the gestures, tone of voice, the walk a mile away. Some women are just intuitive and I guess I'm one of them. Conversation for one gives a person away. Music is another.

I have a gay friend who looks like a Marine and is not at all frou-frou or feminine (but he wants to be a caregiver/mom type - of course you wouldn't know this by looking or talking with him only a few times) and it took me at least a week to figure out he was gay but he said it would have been fine to ask out-right. The straight ones are the ones that freak out so just go with the "I was joking, just making sure you was listening to me before I told you about (Fill in with whatever might seem important)...and I got your full attention now, right?!"...lol...can you tell I've had practice with this?

He has interest in fashion, the theatre (especially musicals), design or any of the arts. He turns his nose up at sports. He's dressed better than you are and can name the designer of your and his clothes. He drives a mini or other cute car. He has a cat or very small dog. He uses words like fabulous. He's genuinely interested in your feelings.
These are all telling signs.

Ask him even if he had a lot of "gay" signs he still could be straight you can never be sure untill you ask the person.

The only way to know for sure is ask. There are effeminate straight men and masculine gay men, so ask him.

if you really want to know....ask.... in this day and age, it shouldn't be a big deal. But ask as if you really dont care eigther way, ya know, if nothing else his reaction will give it away regaurdless if he answers.

Wear an extremely low cut shirt, and see if he watches your boobs. If not, chances are he's either gay or a prude.

Observe him as a beautiful female goes past. You'll know.
