Depending on what you mean by "guard". If you are looking for home protection, any breed is capable of being a deterrent. Just as long as they are a loyal loving dog, they have the ability and desire to defend what they see at their territory. If you are looking for industrial guard purposes, a Schutzhund trained German Shepherd is a good idea. However, they can be extremely dangerous in the wrong situations or with the wrong handler.

Personally, I'd get something that is energetic, affectionate, and loyal, but not particularly big or mean. Most guard dogs are effective because they bark, not because they bite, and almost all dogs bark when people come to the door. My australian sheperd was an excellent guard dog - twice people tried to break into my house, and she woke the neighborhood and three in the morning with her barking.

Rottweilers are great, they are good with children and very protective.
Also, Golden Labs or Labs period are also great family dogs who have been known to do some real damage when they pac is threatened.
Again, you should not be so self conscious about your Avatar. He is handsome and very much looks like he can and is very capable at protection.

I have an english mastiff, rotweiler, pit bull and a red heeler....
An english mastiff gets verry big and intimidates people and they are very protective of their family...very good dogs. A rot is a good watch dog but at times they seem to be a little stubborn and hard to train. The red heeler is a great watch dog but he bites. and the Pit Bull is a big baby.

A Schutzhund German Shepherd.
Don't get anything from a Backyard Breeder, from some who isn't involved in the breed, who doesn't do the proper health testing, or who is selling solely to make money.

Honestly, it depends on what you want.
Some breeds are territorial enough to attack while others will just bark really loud and such.

This place will ask how aggressive you want.
Just please don't beat your dog to get it to be "tough". That gives both dogs owners and the dog breeds themselves a bad reputation.
We used to have a poodle that would scare solicitors away. It had a big bark! ;)
