Of course, back in those times, most educated Greeks understood the myths to be stories told to help them make sense of the world, not literal accounts. There were many atheists and freethinkers in ancient Greece. People seem not to have literally believed that Apollo drove that chariot, only that there was a power of some sort responsible for the sun and that seemed like a good name and description for him.

Open your eyes man! Of course Apollo exists, just look at the sun. Do you think the sun just hangs there in the sky all by itself? What do you mean the earth moves and the sun does not?! You need medical attention, I will call Hippocrates.

Socrates did and he was killed with hemlock.
The reason was that he as a philosopher had come to see that there must be a Supreme Being- what we call God, that's why the pagans killed him because he did not believe in their gods.
You cannot ever come past this , Socrates is a giant compared to you and the the most uneducated Christian knows there is a Supreme Being, though luck.

When the Jews told their Greek masters that they worshipped one God, Yahweh, they were killed, their religion was suppressed and their temple defiled.
When Christians such as Paul told the pagans of the Roman empire that there was one God and He had come to earth in the flesh as Jesus, some rioted, some did violence, had him put in jail, beaten. Later Romans had Christians impaled, thrown to lions, set on fire while still alive and other such happy things.

Excellent point!!!
And in regards to a previous comment that was made:
"Ah, but no one had ever seen Apollo. Jesus was seen by many. "
What a load of crap!! The bible says jesus existed.... but where is the substantial proof?? Green eggs & Ham is a great book, but i don't believe Sam I Am is going to come back & save us from all of our sins if we eat the sacred green eggs! Get your head out of the book and live your damn lives!

Those who belivee in the Bible God will still believe taht theres a God even if you tell them in this day.... not because of their faith its because they fear that they must believe. 2500 years later is no difference by now in terms of proof about creation so i may say that their lack of awareness remain.

Actually, it's not clear at all that the Greeks believed these myths in anything like the way that monotheists believe in God.
It's entirely possible these were figures of speech as much as anything else.

Depends on the Greek. The more educated ones knew that the Earth was round and how round it was. So if you picked the right Greek, they would be fine with it.
The average guy on the street would have thought you were crazy.

"What if you told a Greek, 2500 years ago, that Apollo didn't exist? "
You would probably find a sword in your chest.
