Oh, jeez. Contact the store where you bought the collar. If it's on the lowest level it is not hurting him. He's just being a drama seeker. If you use things like this properly they do not hurt the animal, they help train. Some people on here don't think you should do anything outside of saying, "no" to an animal to train him, and on some animals just the word "no" doesn't work. I haven't tried a bark collar. But, contact the store. I'm sure they will reassure you are doing things just fine.

Sounds like your dog is suffering from separation anxiety disorder. Try doing some things different. I know you do not want him barking. I think the screams are because he is left alone.
1.You may think I'm nut's but get him another dog as a play mate. Dog's do not like being alone.
2nd. Crate him and remove the collar, place some of your dirty laundry in the cage for him to lay on. Start placing him in the crate while your home, if he cries tell him in a loving but firm voice to stop then when he does give him a small biscuit. If he continues to yell you have to keep repeating the steps. Walk out of the room and stay in the other room for 5 min's come in when he start yelping yell back no! Then bring him out take a short walk out doors and try again. It takes a while and you have to do the same thing over and over again. The collars normally do not harm the dog, you can call the PetSafe Company. They normally have training counselors on staff that can tell you more.
Good Luck!

A Bark Collar is NOT a good way to deal with what is obviously is Separation Anxiety in your dog.
A Bark or Correction collar is best used for other scenarios. It's like you are using Gasoline to put out a fire. It's the wrong way to deal with this kind of situation.
It would be better to take your dog to Obedience classes and have the instructor work with you on how to address his separation anxiety as that is what you are having.
I have a shock collar for my dog also, but, I use it when he goes aloof and does not listen to me or is doing something I want to discourage, but, Separation Anxiety is not something I would use this collar for, and I rarely use my Collar anyway now because I already have him minding me.
There are several ways to deal with separation anxiety, and, it's normal for a lot of people that when you first leave, that your dog whines and/or barks. Of course prolonged barking if you are outside needs to be addressed.
If you aren't going to be outside long, you can muzzle him. If you are going outside then you leave like to drive to the store, ......he probably settles down but, if you wanted to find out, leave a voice recorder going while you are away to find out.
I had to deal with one of my Dogs that had a serious Separation anxiety problem, and although I didn't take my own advice and see an Obedience expert, I used another method. His was not a Barking problem, but, a matter of him deciding that he was "gonna show me" by tearing things up.
I came home a few times to find some rather nice things destroyed, and I never hit my Dogs or anything like that, I did however utilize my Kennel outside for awhile, and he decided he could live without me, and when I let him stay inside with some trial runs........no more tearing things up was the result.
I learned from my Obedience instructor though, to not make a big deal and get the dog shook up with a big good-bye when I leave. She said just leave. And when I return, don't get all excited to see him as this just makes leaving and arriving a big deal for him.
Anyway; I don't know if any of this helped, but, I just want to encourage you that there is better ways to deal with separation anxiety than with a Bark Collar.

I agree with others who stated that your dog may have separation anxiety. If that is the case, the worst thing you can do is punish him for barking - he's already upset; the punishment is only going to make him more anxious. Stop using the collar and contact a behavior counselor (ask your vet for a referral or go to www.apdt.com) for advice asap. He or she can let you know for sure if this is anxiety and how to deal with his barking, regardless of the cause.
One other thing, most dogs with s.a. do horribly when crated, so if you have never crated him before, I wouldn't start now.

Ouch... what a horrible thing to do. Your dog is lonely and should not be punished for that. He does not understand yet, that the punishment is because of the barking. Bark collars can be used effectively, but it's not a set-it-and-forget-it type of thing... there is a training regimen that goes along with it. Read the information that came with it... it should tell you how to train your dog to stop barking, while using the collar as a deterrent.
The collar is only a reminder (it shouldn't actually hurt them). You will need to train your dog to stop barking, and the reminder will help them remember if they forget their training.

test to see if it's the collar hurting it. take the collar off and then go out the door like you would, but jst stand out side.
it could be separation anxiety. try to turn on the radio or tv before you leave. or if not, if you have an answering machine, call it and leave messages for the pup.

This might sound weird but maybe your dog has seperation anexity. My friends 2 dogs have it and they would either bark nonstop til she came home or rip the house apart. To solve the problem she put them each in a kennel with their favorite toys while she was gone. My husband wanted to use bark collars on our dogs but I told him if he couldnt put it on his nuts and tollerate the shock it wont go on our dogs

Try the water collar. instead of shocking them it just sprays them under the mouth. works great and doesn't hurt them at all.
