The best exercise is something you can do anywhere and doesn't require you to spend money - the basic pushup.
The pushup hits lots of muscle groups. Add a few crunches and some stretching and you'll be set.

the best way to tone is to lose some of the fat that hides muscle: watch your diet and do cardio. i recommend 3x a week - but consistency is key. i took up kickboxing a few months ago - works like a charm!
