Most manufactures limit there recommended weight to 300 lb (135kg). If you weigh more than this you should be a bit cautious before taking up cycling. Getting a health assessment would be a good start. At least check with you doctor. Take it a bit easy, if your gasping for air your pushing to hard.

I like seeing more people taking up and enjoying cycling. (And getting healthier). I hate hearing about people having heart attacks especially fellow cyclists.

Keeping this in mind. Regular cycling is one of the best ways to get into shape.

The Kona hoss (Probably the most popular among heavy people) is rated to 400lb(180 kg)

Here is a link that will take you to a manufacturer of bikes that are designed for people up to 550 lb (250 kg)

My guess would be a good mountainbike probably, because mountainbikes have to withstand several times the rider's weight at times.

But a good bike shop should have more options.

Go to a good bicycle shop and tell them what you want...tell they aprox what you want to spend.

Note: depending on how much you weigh, you may need stronger rims on your wheels else you will break the spokes. (i know, i've done it!!!)
