If you must put the dog outside:

1) Make sure he has adequate shelter from sun, cold, rain, etc. A dog house would be highly recommended. Don't put anything in it that can absorb and retain moisture. If you live in cold areas, make sure it has a door or flap that doesn't face into the wind! If it's really cold there, you'll have to bring him in. Fur or not, domestic dogs, short of huskies and special breeds, cannot tolerate the cold any better than you can for long periods.

2) Make sure he has plenty of water, and change it TWICE A DAY.

3) Spend lots of time with him whenever you can. Dogs are social creatures. This will be especially important if he's used to being with you.

4) pay extra attention to things like fleas mosquitos, flies and ticks and other parasites and diseases, he'll be more vulnerable now. Bugs annoy pets just as much as they annoy us, and they carry (sometimes deadly) diseases.

5) Brush and bathe your dog regularly. Consider grooming in the hot summer months to help him keep cool.

6)If he digs in the summer, that's because he's trying to find a cool place to lay. If he's a water loving dog, consider a kiddie pool for him in summer.

6) Pay attention and think about his conditions. If something comes about and you cannot accomodate the dog outside, consider giving it up. I KNOW this is an unpleasant idea, but I'm think in terms of brutal winter cold or summer heat and things like that.

Ask your veterinarian or local shelter for more tips.

There is nothing wrong with keeping a dog on a chain as long as he is properly taken care of. Just make sure you still give him attention every day. Try taking him for a walk or taking him off of his chain to play for a while.

Your dog should be trained enough to be at peace when left alone or put on a leash. A chain shouldn't be necessary if you took the time to train the dog. A dog should obey. Try obediance training.

We too had this probelm once, when we moved into an apartment waiting to move into out house. The landlords didn't want the dog inside. We had his house as close to ours as possible, and truth be told, snuck him in at night! I know, I'm bad! Try spending as muck time with him as possible when your home! Good Luck!

Maybe you could fence in an area so he could be outside without the dreaded "chain". Good Luck!

I am going to reply anyway.

Why don't you put him up for adoption? You can foster till a suitable indoor home comes for him.
