From '72-85, the sales of whiskey dropped sharply. Once '85 hit, the sales started to climb rapidly again. Additionally, there was actually a higher production rate in 77 than in 84 by about 10%, increasing the reserve difference even more. This is one of the reasons that the later bottles are a bit more expensive. There are few left in reserve than there are of the earlier ones.
The other big reason for price differences: Quality. Im not sure which brand of whiskey you were looking at, but consider that 84 may have been a better year for taste than 77. Remember that no two batches of any alcohol are identical. Some taste better than others, and price can reflect that.

uhm, i think u got the riddle backwards...it's supposed to read, ''why are 1977 bottles of whiskey more valuable than 1984 bottles of whiskey" making people wonder why less bottles equal more, but in reality the age of the whiskey (year of distillment) makes it more valuable.
