What's not to like? I haven't had a bad experience with them, but then again, I stay on the right side of the law.
Of course I've been nicked for speeding, but in all honesty, that's my look out. They were just doing their job.

If you had asked me that question fifteen or twenty years ago I would probably have answered you by saying "no". Since then I have wisened up quite a bit. I used to think that the police were ignorant, donut eating, power hungry, morons. Since I have become one, I realize now that I was the ignorant one. While there are admittedly some people that should not be police officers, the vast majority are very honest, courageous, and integrity-filled people. Whatever illusions of power one has when they become a police officer will soon diminish as they realize that the elected officials are the one who has power (we work for them), and ultimately the people who elect those officials have the real power.
Someone wrote in their answer here that police do not really stop crime. Quite the opposite is true. While it is true that police only arrest people after the fact (I don't know how else they would do it), it is the fear of being punished for a crime that is a great deterrent for committing a crime in the first place. If you knew that there would be no consequences of your actions, what would prevent you from doing whatever you pleased.
The mere sight of a police can and will deter crime. That is why they drive in brightly colored vehicles with reflective markings and light bars on the top. When people see a police car, it will prevent at least most from doing any wrong whether you are just speeding, or are selling crack on the street corner.
Of course police will always be unpopular. Usually it is only those who are breaking the law and want to continue in their actions that dislike law enforcement; but sometimes good, law-abiding, but misguided and misinformed people hate the police out of ignorance just as I once did.

That is a very in depth question;
Yes I believe we need a police force.
Unfortunately because police are human there are those not fit to hold the title.
In the main I have to believe that the police are carrying out the job they are paid to do, that is uphold the law and protect the general public.

When I see these type questions, and then some of the responses, I can't help but respond with my own feedback.
For those who think the police are "an extension of the government"...well...you're correct, however, they are the extension of the government based upon the laws of society that "We the People" put in place to start with. Therefore, the officers are "enforcers" of the laws "we the people" asked to be placed there for our protection and safety.
It would be sad if officers stepped off the line you've asked them to stand dividing law and order from anarchy.
The majority of people would prefer to live in a community free from crime and disruption. The police are there to protect those from others who feel the need to prey upon the innocent who can't fend for themselves.
Most who dislike the police do so because they've received a ticket or been arrested for an offense. My question would be: Who was responsible for breaking the law in the first place....it wasn't the police...it was the one who got the ticket or jail. So...don't blame the police for your own mistake. Those are the types of people who need to grow up and act like the adult they should be.
As a citizen....don't expect me to allow you to step on my rights to the same protections I provide those in my community. You don't have a right to invade my privacy or steal my property or make me a victim of your crime. So whether wearing a badge or not....your rationale about the police being bad is mute! I would do the same as a civilian!
For those who support law enforcement....you're certainly thanked for letting us know we're appreciated.
Police officers are human beings. We are ALL subject to mistakes just like civilians. The only difference is the mistakes we make are often thrown to the media who often distort or cover only half the story for the money generated by their "sensationalism." Who wants to watch boring news? If an officer has done wrong...then the laws apply to the officer just as anybody else!
I've said my peace! Best wishes.

It really depends on your dealings with them. If you were in desperate need of help and you rang the Police and they arrived quickly and dealt with you in a fair manner and were courteous then you probably would like them. The same could apply to a plumber...As with any occupation some are good some are bad. Have you had dealings with Police in other countries? If so I doubt if that was a better experience. Have you ever tried to report a theft abroad.....

Yes, because without them the social structure would fall apart. We have to keep in mind that just as in any other 'group' there are those who are not fit for the job and there are those that are made for the job. Either way they rock because while we (those of us that are not police officer) sleep at home and don't care for a thing, they are out there risking their lives.

Yes, with lots of Respect !! For all the People they are confronted with, good and bad. They endure all types of abuse from citizens. Verbal and physical abuse. They carry out the Laws of this Great Land and every citizen needs to Respect the American Police Force.

To, KC
You must be completely ignorant on the idea of anarchist society. It isn't complete chaos as you have been feed and ingested. Judging from your answers you are good at ingesting what your feed without free thought.
The corruption of police is put into the media because it isn't news when someone does their job, but when a cop beats a bartender down it tends to be interesting.
YOU must ask yourself when walking down the street can you at anytime be shot? Can your house be broken into? Can your wife be raped and children murdered?
If the answer is yes have the police made you any safer? NO. They catch criminals after the fact they do not stop crimes, at best they stop criminals from repeating crimes. For all intents and purposes they cannot protect you at any given point in the day.
Considering the inmate population that are non violent offenders your aren't being protected as much as you should and the job of the police is to support the tax generator that is the prison system.
So no I don't like the police and I haven't even touched on power issues once they become police.

I LOVE the police. Especially in comparison to the bad guys.
I've also loved the police. One great looking female detective in particular...but that's not material here.

I have to.as long as we are not involved any negative angle with the police,in other words, if we are law abiding and good citizen, then we are not affected by the police.but, since we require some percentage of population should be with legal rights to control and arrest the criminals, who are named as police. this is the main reason I like them.
