It seems to me that normal people are seen as not true Americans unless they are on prescription for a number of drugs. Honestly, specially antidepressants. As hard as it may be to deal with certain situations, being on 5 different drugs doesn't help, specially once a person becomes addicted to them(you know it happens).

How can we as a society tell children to say no to drugs while being prescribed and dependant on drugs ourselves, not to mention over the counter ones.

I could not agree with you more, but we are a fickle society that wants microwave solutions to everything. I can't sleep, take a sleeping pill, I need to wake up, take an upper, I'm depressed, take diazepam, I need to get high, there's coke, meth and many other lousy substitutes.
No life is free from problems, we actually need them. Hard times only make us stronger, unfortunately we want a bed of roses all the time and when that does not happen we need substitutes, we also lack faith and self confidence. In Mexico, among upper circles it is shocking to hear mothers discussing their kids problems and actually parading proudly which doctor is actually treating their child for any kind of fad disorder, and what medication the kids are on. It seems to be fashionable. 5 antidepressants seems to be too much, even one is too much. I have taught my kids that while they are of school age they have two basic responsibilities, one is to do well in school and the other is to be happy. We are never taught to be happy, I believe that is part of the problem.
Sad..

wow,,,,
5 different meds,,,I do feel that may be a bit extreme.

How old are you? What did they diagnose you with?
It would solely depend on YOUR unique situation.
I was diagnosed with like 5 different things, and they had one med for me,,,,it does ok, well enough that i believe I don't need to get upped or switched.

If you really question the opinion of your current care giver,
I do recommend a second opinion,,,,it can't hurt at all, but it will require some patience on your part.

I would just first speak to your current doctor and ask him if there is anything that he can put you on that treats several to all of your symptoms, even if it drops your pills to 2-3-that's good for a start. Just remember that WE don't have control over how we feel, that is why we are on med's to begin with, I know it gets frustrating, but if you aren't happy with that doctor, it isn't illegal to ask another one.

And I am well aware of the 'addiction'.
If they had to take me off right now, I would end up back in the unit. I would not be able to cope with my life right now.

Let me know how you do Hun, I'll be thinkin of ya.

I completely agree with you.

I'm in favor of using meds for a person who is extremely depressed and seeking treatment to deal with their issues. However, I would expect that the same person would start to ween off the meds so that they eventually lead a normal life without them. Depression and other disorders are caused my chemical imbalances. But by dealing with your emotional issues eases you of a lot of the symptoms. That should be dealt with when on medication, and not dismissed.

I hate it when doctor immeditaley prescribe meds for something that can be controled. For example, I was recently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and the doctor's first response was Xanax. I opted not to do it, and over the past few months, I'm learning to cope and deal with it in other ways like meditation. It works. You just have to make yourself believe that it can work.

First of all depression is a disease that people can not help. They can not cure it them selves. their serotonin levels are off. they can not fix that any way at all no matter what. Not all people are addicted to meds. just b/c someone is prescribed a prescription does not mean that the are not a TRUE american. what the hell is a true american........
