I have not changed stations, nor the position of the radios (one in bedroom, other in bathroom on 2nd floor of house).

Have you recently added a touch on touch off lamp near the clock radio? This is often times the source of interference. Tracking down the source of interference is easy if you have a battery powered transistor radio around. Just select AM and turn the dial all the way one direction or the other and walk around the premisses. Good luck because it could be almost anything...
You didn't mention whether you have the noise in both the AM and FM mode.
If you have a modern clock radio it should already be grounded when pluged in. Unless your household wireing is outdated. If so you may just try turning the plug around. If you suspect wireing problems you need to contact a Professional to protect yourself from personal injury.

There may also be dust built up on the tuner or it may need a ground and antenna

something is interfering with the signal...magnets, electronics, etc.

It could also be the radio station itself or its towers.
