Which city are you going? I lived in Shanghai for 6 months Beijing for 1 year and Guangzhou also for 1 year. I liked it there a lot, Cheap shopping, good food, Some people rarely smile but they meant nothing, I think it is because they're too busy, I hope you enjoy your study just like I did, but if you could be more specific what do you want to know please add some detail and i refresh my answer later.

For xAngelx: I have lived in China for more than one year, so feel free to ask me anything about it that you like. Better yet, you can visit my new forum: www.daxueyingyu.com/forum There are mainly English speaking Chinese and foreigners living in China on the forum, so between them and me you should be able to get more than enough information about anything related to China.
To briefly answer your questions here: The school before university, especially the last 3 years of high school, is very tough. This is because the entrance exams to uni. are extremely competitive. After that life in school is not too bad, but in general I would say that students are involved in fewer extra-curricula activities than in other countries.
At home the parents enjoy a high level of respect in most families, but in some cities this is starting to change with the new younger generation in some of the more developed cities tending to be a bit rebellious.
The people are mainly friendly, but you need to be careful as sometimes they have hidden agendas....
Ok, if you want to know more you can go to the forum.
Good luck!
@ Harry: there is a Chinese version of Yahoo! Answers, and I can personally guarantee you that there are some Chinese who also use the "regular English" version. Please don't try to spread ideas without proper facts or research. Thank you.

Very interesting and very different. Some people are lovely and some are horrible - hey - just like "The West" - how amazing! Westerners earn good wages compared to the locals, so your money goes a long way within China. Suprisingly, some people are quite lawless, in spite of the pre-conceived idea of Communist countries, and often break the law in minor / petty areas - hey -just like "The West" - how amazing! People are people, all over the world. You maybe have to leave America to learn that.

I lived in Shanghai for 3 1/2 years and there are good and bad about it.
The good:
1. Food is fantastic - one can get all kinds of cuisine whether
is local fare or Western cuisine.
2. Shopping is cheap and plenty around big cities and in
Shanghai, branded stuff are everywhere in big department
stores. Fakes are everywhere too...so be careful.
3. DVDs (pirated) are being sold everywhere dirt-cheap.
4. Plenty of bars and nightclubs in Shanghai.
5 Cost of living is generally cheap if you are an expat and
earning US dollars.
The bad:
1. The local people are mostly unfriendly and some of them
are not honest when dealing with customers.
2. The locals likes to spit everywhere.
3. They don't know the meaning of manners.
4. The hygiene of some small eateries are awful.
5. The locals are very quarrelsome and speaks loudly ...on
buses, trains, lifts, on their handphones........etc.
6. The toilets are smelly and dirty.....even in restaurants!!
7. The locals drives like F1 drivers and uses their horns
non-stops.
8. Most local women are man-eaters, marriage-wreckers
and money grabbers @ blackmailers.
