Telling the person "you talk too much," while to the point, is not helpful to the person and is unlikely to get them to change.

If you are going to get them to understand what they are doing, I think you have to be more specific, and maybe be prepared to interrupt them at strategic points in their monologue.

It's my observation that most people who hog the conversation tend to be either extroverts to the point where they barely notice other people are around them, or else they really don't value other people's opinion much.

If the person is just a real extrovert, then you can probably make your point by joking a little: "Okay, Myra, your 15 minutes of fame are over, it's time to let someone else have the spotlight!" or "Myra, you had us all at [some phrase used early in the monologue]. It's your turn to listen for a while. Suzanne, what were you trying to say?" and so forth. As long as you keep it humorous, the person who is just an extrovert will probably not feel offended, and may get the point.

If the person is someone with an overblown ego who really doesn't care whether anyone else gets to say anything, you might have to get a bit more confrontational: "Marge, it's pretty hard to respect your opinions on anything when you never give anyone else a chance to speak. We've been very tolerant about listening to you and now we think it's your turn to listen to others for a while." (This works best if several of the people who feel this way get together and agree to put it into action.)

Good luck.

When you have a moment, try to change the subject to something you can talk more about, or something you can both talk about equally.

My mother is one of those people who talk way too much. When she came to visit my husband and me, I never got a word in edgewise without being interrupted by her. When I got a moment with her alone, I told her 'You know, I'd really like to be included in the conversation, Mom. Could you take a break from talking so much?' She knows she talks too much, and tries not to, but she does anyway. It didn't help to tell her that, but I just dealt with it, since she was only there for the day. But that's why I don't see her often. She bugs the hell out of me.

You know what? You will have to be kind, but also truthful. I have had the same problem with people in the past. When you tell them they talk too much none of them have ever taken it well. However, they responded and became better at controling their mouth. Take them to the side and just tell them, "Look I at not trying to be mean, but you talk way too much". And tell them, you feel overwhelmed everytime they talk. When you meet people who talk too much the root of it emotional pain which is undealt with. Some did not get attention from their parents or peers growing up. All that talking is from years of pent up anger, sorrow, aggression, loneliness and other things. Talking too much is sin. So just take that into consideration when you pull them to the side.

I am a very good listener up to a point....then I start seeing double and the sandman comes for me.
