I am planning on getting my dear kitten spayed very soon, but I've heard it's not all that safe to spay while she's in heat. I'm not completely sure of how a cat in heat acts (she's my first cat :]), so I'm not really sure if she's to that stage yet. Thanks for the help!

Get her spayed immediately. It's not that it's dangerous to spay while they are in heat, it's just better to do so when they aren't, as the blood vessels in the uterus become very engorged with blood and they may bleed a lot more. If she is in heat, she may rub on things a lot more, meow, cry or scream excessively, present her rear end to you as if to say, "mount me", and her vulva will appear enlarged. I would take her to the vet and get an appointment scheduled ASAP. If she is older than 6 months, she could go into heat at any time. Spaying is the only option at this point. Don't make me explain how to get a cat out of heat quicker...you won't want to do it and I don't really want to tell you how to essentially masturbate your cat, LOL! The sad part is, I'm serious! But really, see your vet and schedule the spay. Your kitty will love you for it.

It's not too dangerous to spay a cat in season - it's female dogs that shouldn't be spayed in season.

Your kitten can become sexually mature from 4 months old, although from 5 months is more likely, and this is the time of year for it. There are very obvious behaviour changes - strange vocalisation that sounds if she's in pain, waving her bottom in the air, dripping from her vulva and generally acting like a complete ho! Believe me, you'll know - but keep her inside until she's spayed (until the sutures are removed in fact), just in case she gets fruity for the first time when she's outside!

OMG, you will know! Trust me.

I have a kitty to she is almost 61/2 months old and she just had her first heat cycle about 2 weeks ago...

It was He** she howled all hours of the night (my left eye was twitching from lack of sleep) I had to get up and tell her to SHUT UP!!! Argh!

She wasn't very playful, all she did was lay around with her butt in the air...

Cats are generally in heat for 3-5 days and have a heat cycle every 3 weeks!

I had my cat fixed last week (no joke) I NEVER want to go throught that again...

It depends on the vet, mine spays during heat. You'll have to check. Hold old is your kitten? Spaying should be at 4 to 6 months. Trust me, you'll know if she goes in heat. They like to rub their rear end on the floor, walk with their rear on the floor, and they cry. Or howl, if you can call it that. Its a sound you've never heard before! Thankfully, I spayed all my girls!

Well, whenever my cat goes into heat she will love on anything. She will run up against chairs, other cats, people's legs, anything. She also makes a whole lot of noise. She will meow and howl all day long. She also will roll around and expose her belly side to you frequently. I would look for behaviors like that.

Depends on he cat. But typically, she will have like a meow/moan type of thing, (my cat used to scream in the middle of the night) she could possible hump a wall or someone's leg... there is a lot, but I hope this helps...

If she's about 5 months then you don't need to worry about it. If she's 6 months or older, you can't miss it!! She will yowl as if she's being killed, raise her rear end at you and show off her back end while her tail is held to the side rigidly, and will put her chest to the floor while stamping her back feet. You won't be in any doubt if this happens to you, it is obscene!

It'll be obvious. She'll be affectionate to the point of annoying, scream like a banshee, and roll around on the floor like she's on drugs.
