hightlights.
easier, dont have to fix them up as much, and if your hair is dark, it could be a dramaitc change.
try blond or red.

Since your hair is naturally very dark you want to start with a change that is noticeable, but not freaky. Don't go to light or you may regret it. Start simple with some light brown or blonde highlights. If you're a red person, red highlights are good as well, however, they are much harder to keep up. It's something about red dye that just doesn't last as long as others. If you do it yourself, test a small portion of your hair, something you can cover. I would suggest seeing a professional and they can show you a color chart and you can pick something that looks good or you think will look good on you. Like I said start slow and work from there and always remember less is more.

Have you tried just lightening it a few shades before you actually go and dye it a whole different shade? Dark hair usually looks good with a reddish tint but with your skin being so pale that's tricky. And maybe because you are so pale a blonde would work but that might just wash you out. I suggest just trying to lighten it maybe to a chestnut or reddish tint just to try something...honestly I'd have to see you to know :( but just keep trying and I hope something works out for you! Ask your hairstylist too....they would see you and have worked with your hair before so they would know more than anyone online would.

well I haven't seen a picture of you so I am going to go with my artists intuition... I think you should stick with the brown/black but add like a light alburn in streaks to add summer flavor!! Short or long hair I've seen improve

There are some nice burgundy tints out there... some people don't like the purplish of it, but it adds a little something when the sun shines on your hair.
