I moved to IN on August of last year and all my earnings are from IL. There was no tax withholding from IN and I don't own a house so I have no Real Estate taxes either. Do I still file for IN even if I have no earnings, no deductions or any credits there?

Since you don't have any Indiana wages, you aren't required to file an Indiana return. There is a renters deduction like the person before me said but you have to have income and a tax liability in order to be able to take that deduction. There's no reason for you to file.

You will have to file returns in both IN and IL. They no longer have a reciprocity agreement between them.

File a part year non-resident return in IL, listing all income earned while living and / or working in IL. Pay any tax due.

File a part year resident return in IN, listing all income earned anywhere after you moved to IN. Take a proportional credit for the taxes paid to IL for time AFTER you moved to IN only.

If you still live in IN and work in IL, you'll need to file a non-resident return in IL next year and a resident return in IN. You'll take a full credit on your IN tax return for the taxes paid to IL.

You don't have to file federal taxes if your income is less than your standard deduction. But you may file if you're head of househould or married filing joint and have dependents that may qualify you for Earned Income Credit. Earned Income Credit is a refundable credit. Visit the irs.gov for more information.

If you're just asking about state tax filing in Indiana, then you don't have earnings in Indiana, then you don't have to file. Please click the following link:

If you had earnings after you moved to IN, even though they were in IL, you probably have to file in IN as well as IL.

Some rules vary from State to State, but if after moving to Indiana, you had no earnings, then you don't have to file IN.

If you are a renter in IN, it may benefit you to file as a part-year resident....
