Yes Chihuahua's do get hurt easly when their puppy's, you have to be careful not to let them jump from bed's and couches and stuff, and you really have to be careful not to step on them! I have a 6 month old, got her when she was 10 weeks, and she has been stepped on a few times. Dont worry about it jumping up on something cuz its to little, just jumping down. I made little ramps out of pillows so she could get up and down without getting hurt. It works great for me. This is my second chihuahua my first one lived to be 11 years old. But i would worry about stepping on it more than it jumping down off something. And its only when their young, they do grow and their bones get stronger. My little one now only weighs 2.7 pounds but she can jump up and down with no problem now and she's pretty good about getting out of the way! You just have to be careful for awhile, look around when your walking around, and make the little ramps, or get stairs. But its so worth it, they are so cute and loveable and are very good companions. I hope you get one. Good luck!!!

I own #9 Chihuahuas, and it's true, that they are very fragile dogs, and you have to be extra careful with them. Mine, all have their moments, running around, jumping, playing etc., etc., but I have never had a problem with any of them, getting hurt. I have little kitty collars with bells on them, on mine, and that helps alot, because you can hear, where they are alot better. As far as the jumping, they just need some training. Accidents can happen, but just be real careful, and I really don't think you will have a problem. Good Luck! Don't worry! Enjoy your new baby! You are going to fall so in love with him/her!

Usually, if a dog is big enough and strong enough to get up somewhere, they are strong enough to be able to jump down by themselves. If a puppy say can't climb up on the couch, you wouldn't have him up there and risk him jumping and landing wrong.
I don't know why you would be so worried about a dog breaking it's leg.
Don't have a dog higher than is safe to jump down from.

My chi jumps off of everything. She does have a luxating patella meaning her knee caps don't stay in place. It is very common for smaller dogs to have this, and usually does not bother them. If you decide to get a Chi, and they have the same condition and begin limping then you should take them to the vet who will likely refer you to a surgeon, since it is very likely that they will develop arthritis as they get older if this is not corrected.

I have an 12yr old chihuahua that weighs 5lbs and she jumps up and down off of everything she can and she has never hurt herself. If you're that scared of one getting hurt then you can train them to stay off of furniture or you could consider getting another breed of dog. But if you do decide on a chihuahua they are great pets I have 4 of them myself.

I had one for 15 years. In her younger days she would climb up onto the washing machine and jump off of that just for the sheer joy of it. She never once got hurt.

We have one, and she is a live wire!!!! She will be 2 yrs old next month and hasnt hurt herself yet. Every dog can hurt its self one way or another-don't let that stop you from years of fun with a pet.
