If you are running the windows version of iTunes, you can find that it runs slowly if you have the minimum spec of 256mb of ram, I would suggest at least a 1GHz processor and 512mb of ram as a minimum.... that is what I have on one PC and iTunes isn't the fastest piece of software in the world, but runs well and is stable. The other computer is an 2Ghz 64 bit processor with 2Gb of ram, on this machine iTunes never has any issues...
If you are running iTunes on a mac and it is running slowly, I'd check you have run all your maintenance tasks recently (if you don't know how to do that, download the maintidget widget that does it for you) and if still having problems I suggest you repair the permissions (it's a good trick for any slow running mac)
To repair permissions:
Finder > Applications > Disk Utility and then select first aid...
click the repair permissions button and let it work it's magic
Yes I have both Windows and Mac computers...
Having a large amount of your harddrive taken up with music is always going to slow a computer down, the more space you have on your hard drive, the more the computer can utilise it's space as virtual memory, my advice would be to always try and have your large files such and music or video on a separate hard drive or partition from the drive with your operating system on it.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

Ur first situation is Vista itself. swap to 7 if plausible in the different case XP is a lot extra advantageous. unfastened area on ur confusing disc is actual ok. And ultimately i'd desire to factor out that u havent reported something in any respect abt the registry. If u havent appeared after it out then do it at as quickly as. Its an essential area of the computing gadget and perhaps the main severe one after RAM so some distance as computing gadget's velocity is worried. So freshen up and address ur registry utilising RegInOut gadget Utilities. It additionally enables u to regulate which courses start up at once on domicile windows startup (yet yet differently to velocity up ur computing gadget) between many different innovations. i desire i helped u to ur satisfaction.
