It was written with the idea that a government is made up by the people and is for the people. The government should serve the people. It was also written with the idea that all people have rights and that the government cannot infringe upon these rights in an unjust manner. One of the rights is a freedom of religion. To advance that right, the consitution specifically prohibits the government from advocating or even favoring any single religion. It is plain as day if you read the constitution.

The Articles of Confederation didn't work because the states had all the power and there was not way to enforce taxation on a national level. So the framers vested the power of legitimacy in the citizenry rather than in the states.

The system we have is a democratic republic. We have a representative democracy instead of a pure democracy.

The constitution is the framers' attempt to balance the power between the three branches of national government and the national and state governments.
