Sometimes it's if you have killed someone usually you are in a gang or some relation there of. It can also be a memorial to a lost loved one. But usually people know getting that tattoo as a memorial that it can be taken the other way.

It signifies a little black teardrop coming out of the corner of the eye.

It's often gang related, for every teardrop it signifies someone that the person with the tattoo killed. So if you see someone with three teardrops it would mean they've killed 3 people

My teenage son's friend came to school a couple of weeks ago with one mistakenly on the outside corner because his grandpa had recently died. He was made to remove it immediately & given a stern warning because the principal said it means that you have killed someone (The principal used to teach at a prison)! So outside corner=murder & I guess inside corner=just lost a loved one!

it depends
normally its how many hits (kills) a gang member has had...usually you can't be a part of a gang until you have atleast one teardrop.
however some goths use the teardrop to show how emo they are

Depending on the side its on, I think it either means you've lost someone close to you or that you had killed someone. For some its a gang symbol as well.

I dont know if it still does, but it used to mean that the person killed someone.
