Because the stigma behind women and tattoos has begun to fall to the wayside, and women today are more independent and free thinking then they used to be. There were women that were heavily pierced and tattooed for many decades, but they were mostly in circus sideshows, or they would keep their artwork hidden by covering it with jewelry. If you are further interested in the history of women and tattoos, I would suggest the book Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoos by Margot Mifflin available here : http://www.amazon.com/Bodies-Subversion-Secret-History-Tattoo/dp/1890451002
It is a wonderful read of the history of tattooed women, past and present.

Because it's a way to express yourself and decorate your body the way you like.
I don't understand why everyone has this cookie cutter wife image in their mind. With the 1950's style of life. Where the woman's job was soley to take care of the husband and eventaully the children. And where she couldn't do what she wanted, when she wanted... It's 2007, and any man that doesn't want me because I'm tatted is not worth my time.

i guess because it is more socially acceptable. however in the early 1900's in london there were tons of women with tattoos all of them high society women. it was a status symbol.

Because we can...
I'm not sure what type of answer you're looking for, but I don't know why it matters, its acceptable to have a tattoo and the times are changing. Its a personal choice and expression.

i speak for myself when i say that i knew at a very very young age that it's what i wanted for myself. all of my tattoos (and piercings for that matter) have meaning and specific memories tied to them.
