Yes, but for goodness sakes, be polite.
They WILL open the case and look in, let them do anything that doesn't damage the instrument.
Sometimes I've had to argue, (hey, the replacement cost of this thing is $3000, I've carried on before, your baggage handlers aren't gonna touch this!) Generally, they either put mine in the first class closet, (I usually fly coach), or if it will fit in the overhead storage....
Don't figure you'll be allow much else as carry on.

Not any more. Make sure you bring a hardshell case for your guitar. I brought a canvas case for my Martin. They told me I couldn't bring it on as a carry-on so I put about 100 fragile stickers on it. It still got dented but I didn't notice until a few hours after I left.
And no you cannot. I got into a big argument over it to the point where they told me that I won't be able to fly if I continue to argue. This was a $1000 guitar.

Truth be told, it depends where you are flying and on what carrier. In most US airlines, you cannot take the guitar case as a carry-on because it violates the size allowances for the overhead and under-seat sections.
That said, many people are very squeamish about traveling with their instruments in the hold, and as such, many have purchased tickets for them. I know of one case where a lady flew her cello with her in business class. Rare to be sure, but it does happen.
My advice? Pack your guitar in a special travel case, and check it with the rest of your stuff.
Good luck!

A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin. Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, height and width added together).
So it would appear that you can't.

No, it will be forced to the checked luggage, and it will get bumped around a lot so make sure to either pad it extremely well or borrow/buy a special traveling case made for that purpose.

If it is not one of those wild west types with the Gatling gun hidden in it and it can be stored under you seat, I believe it is OK. Call the airline to be safe.
