is it fully charged? Charge it if not. Often not enough power to open the lens up if low charge. Try new batteries if the power charger is down
If still not working take back to a dealer.

It sounds like a battery problem to me too. We had a kodak and the batteries seem to run low when it was not in use. I don't think it was the batteries because it doesn't happen in my canon.
