Yes, someone with mental illness is usually aware that there is something wrong with them. Even someone who is delusional typically (not always) knows that 'this can't be right.'
Some people however, spend their life in denial. But, you know, normal people do the same thing! How many men deny that there is something wrong with their moral status when they cheat on their wives?

Yes someone with a mental illness can be aware that something is wrong with him or her. There may be some denial as far as perception goes, but many people are fully aware that something is wrong.

i was in denial for a very long time but i eventually had to admit that there was a problem having said that i was in a job where i could spend my life in deniall i worked nights and was on my own only became a problem when i started working with people again

Absolutely, that was my first response to go seek help, was that a knew something was wrong. I was studying psychology at the time ,so had a hand up as you could say, I had some answer right there in my studies, but the first step, the hardest ,step, the BEST step is first admitting there is something wrong ......

denial comes but can go away with time. I have crawled out of the black hole. It was tough but worth it in the end
