According to where you live *and* your citizenship. If you're an American citizen living in America, you just need your passport if you want to stay for no more than 90 days.

As a U.S. Citizen you do not need a visa to go to Italy- only a valid passport.

Well if you live in the EU or The United States, I don't think you need a visa. Just grab your passport and go.
